Recalling memories in pebbles

Arts, with all its forms, come in different shapes and sizes and artists use all manner of materials to create their creative masterpieces. While some produce arts on traditional canvas, others use hardboard or parts of driftwood to capture their creativity. On the other hand, some are searching for more inspiration to demonstrate their unique imagination. Hence, they get stuck between a rock and a hard place to get their art piece done.

Creating art on rocks and stones is not much different than painting on papers, canvas, or walls. The supplies are almost the same, but the surface is just different and that is what can be challenging for artists. The small stones and rough surfaces are not the easiest to paint, especially if you want fine details. It is attributed that every stone owns a statue and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it. Thus, every stone brings a different sculpture or story, reflecting its place in nature.

On beaches, for instance, inspiration sources are abundant, especially the rocky and pebbly ones. What if you live in Oman that has the most magnificent beaches! Possibly, many artists are looking for ideas on how to get inspired by beach stones as they visit the beach quite often. The eye-catching pebbles, as an example, make them always think that they should be creating something distinguished with them! Beach pebbles inspiration is for everyone, both adults and kids, and is generously offered to people by nature.

Pebbles, even as small as your thumbnail, or huge stones have the power to tell interesting stories that our world needs to hear. Every beach pebble is there for a parent, a teacher, an artist, a writer, a poet and a craftsperson to discover its beauty. Perhaps, one has to give it a shot and take a trip of discovery to get inspired and create a mesmerising piece of art. There are various yet to be discovered treasures in nature that our modern world has forgotten or undervalued.

Among these natural gems are the beach pebbles, which are widely used worldwide in pebble art or pebble painting today. The name says it all; it is represented in stones or pebbles that are combined in a framed artwork, narrating someone’s story or memory. These pebbles can be personalised by the artist with a message written along with a creative pebble artwork for every story or memory that needs to be conveyed. Likewise, pebbles can also be colourfully handpainted to have a more attractive artwork.

Theme-based pebble artworks stand as the hottest new gift idea nowadays, which Inaam Naboulsi, a Lebanese lady, is mastering here in the Sultanate. She is taking a unique path of art to reflect her creativity. Inaam creates artworks using pebbles collected from different places to communicate people’s memories, emotions and memorable moments in picturesque creations. Being an architect, who is proficient in different design applications, she can easily develop customised concepts for every single piece of artwork.

With her skilful hands, customers’ stories are perfectly transformed into spellbinding pebble artworks. Usually, Inaam makes no changes to the stones to create the pieces, which are a mix of shells and pebbles. However, in some cases, some extra drawings are required to convey the concept. The themes and messages are mostly selected based on the occasion and which pebbles are available, and her inspirations come from life and the beauty in it.

“I’ve always loved customized gifts in its simplicity and being one-of-a-kind, unique and creative appearance. Pebble Art defines the ideal precious, unique handmade gifts for any special occasion such as birthdays, family celebrations, graduation, wedding anniversary, new baby or even farewell parties. What is great about this kind of art is that each design is wonderfully embellished in an array of brightly coloured pebbles. Each pebble or shell is always uniquely chosen for a specific artwork and to tell a different story! Moreover, many other different elements or crafting materials could be used on hand to personalise customers’ gifts”, Inaam explained.

Inaam’s first pebble artwork was on the theme ‘family’. People started to notice her works when she gifted some of her creations to her friends on birthdays and other special occasions. As friends and family encouraged her, she took this hobby seriously, so she made numerous theme-based artworks using pebbles, drawings, threads and other simple art material. She opened her Instagram page last October 2020. Also, she took part in an exhibition at Art & Soul Gallery. So far, she had been able to produce over 300 pieces, recording a range of people’s memories in such an ingenious way.

She believes that the truth is not in the touch of a stone, but in what the stone tells you. “There will always be rocks in the roads ahead of us; either as stumbling blocks or stepping-stones. However, it all depends on how we use and shape these stones. Pebbles are the same; how we use them is what defines the value of each piece we have in hand”, she commented.

As much of the history of the world's civilisations is recorded in stone, so are the memories mirrored in pebble art. It is thought that a stone from the hand of a friend is like an apple, so does Inaam convey the same with all the pebble artworks she produces! All you need to recall your memories in an inspiring way is to just approach Inaam on @pebbleartoman to make your memorable moments well designed for you.
