MADRID: The Council of Oman took part in the assembly of the secretaries-general of national parliaments as part of the 143rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) hosted by Spain during November 26-30.

The assembly was attended by Khalid bin Ahmed al Saeedi, Secretary-General of the State Council, and Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohammed al Nadabi, Secretary-General of Majlis Ash’shura.

The sessions of the IPU conference discussed proposed amendments of the regulations of the assembly of the secretaries-general of national parliaments, the importance of the standing committees in enacting laws, the developments in the innovation centres in parliaments (the e-Parliament).

The parliaments presented interventions on the digital transformation, online seminars for students, and the preparations for the future, digital knowledge through parliaments, parliament and citizens and a new smartphone application.

A workshop, co-organised by the IPU in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme, was held under the title “Public Participation in the Work of Parliaments: Challenges, Opportunities and Good Practices”.

The workshop dealt with three axes: education and deepening understanding of parliaments’ work, consultation using collective knowledge to disseminate information on legislation and oversight public participation in the decision-making processes, and proposals for the exchange of knowledge and the development of practical tools for public participation in the work of parliament in the context of continuous international parliamentary cooperation.
