Muscat: Having been postponed since January 2020 the eagerly awaited 2021 OHI Oman Opens were played this weekend at Ghala Golf Club. Now in its 11th year and generously supported by OHI for the fifth time the event, organised by the Oman Golf Association, brings together the top amateur golfers across five categories: men’s, ladies, under 18, under 15 and under 12.

Day one saw perfect scoring conditions at Ghala Golf Club with the course prepared immaculately, taking full advantage of this were four-time OHI Oman Ladies Open Champion Lynn Casey (Al Mouj Golf) and visiting Qatari National Team Player Salah Al Kabi who posted opening rounds of level par 72 gross and six under par 66 gross respectively to commandingly lead their divisions.

In the Under 18’s division James Acebedo (Ghala Golf Club) took the first-round lead by shooting an 83 with Darsh Pawani (Ras Al Hamra) three shots further behind on 86. Younger brother Krish Pawani (Ras Al Hamra) took the lead in the Under 15’s with an 82 with Juan Moreno (Ras Al Hamra) scoring 86 to trail by four strokes.

As part of their mandate to grow the game the Oman Golf Association fully supported by OHI introduced the Under 12 category to the 2019 OHI Oman Open’s. Playing the same course, but from shorter tees, the younger golfers play 9 holes each day. After the first round a familiar name appeared atop the leaderboard with Yusuf Al Rumhy (Ghala Golf Club) scoring 45 to lead by four strokes over Mohib Al Kathiri (Al Mouj Golf).

Day two saw no change in all but one of the leaderboards. In the Under 12’s Yusuf Al Rumhy held off a strong finish by Mohib Al Kathiri to take the title with Al Kithiri finishing as runner up. In the Under 15’s the overnight leader Krish Pawani was pushed into runner up spot by Juan Moreno who scored an impressive day two 80 to earn the title of Champion Under 15 Golfer for 2021. In the Under 18’s division both James Acebedo and Darsh Pawani recorded 84’s meaning that there was no change to the final standings with Acebedo becoming the Champion Golfer for 2021 and Pawani taking runner up spot.

In the OHI Oman Ladies Open Lynn Casey added a 78 to her first round 72 to be crowned Champion Golfer for the fifth consecutive time, Emma Merritt (Al Mouj Golf) took the runner up place.

Despite opening the second round with a double bogey six, overnight leader Al Kabi quickly steadied the ship with birdies at holes 2, 3 and 4 to regain his commanding lead. It was a lead that was never relinquished as he proceeded to add a one under par 71 to his six under par 66 from Day 1 to take the Champion Golfer title by thirteen strokes over fellow country man Ali Al Shahrani who finished as runner up. National Team Player Badar Al Amri (Ghala Golf Club) earned the award of Top Omani Player in the field with matching rounds of 80 each day.

Guests of honour His Excellency Dr Mohammed Al Rumhy and Ammar Maqbool Al Saleh were joined by the Oman Golf Association Chairman Mundhir Al Barwani to distribute the prizes.

Other winners included Wania Ahmed (Best Net Under 12), Pransh Jagwani (Best Net Under 15), Ayman Al Busaidi (Best Net Under 18), Jameela Daud (Best Ladies Net) and Ahmed Syaifudin (Best Net).
