In alignment with Oman Vision 2040, coastal special planning zones and coastal zone management have been mooted to ensure further development of plans and requirements related to marine environment in the Sultanate of Oman.

“The scope of coastal zone management will take account of the whole coastline of the country, as it is a vital and attractive zone to many activities”, suggests the National Spatial Strategy.

In addition, the strategy calls for an integrated management framework to ensure coordination between various economic, social and environmental requirements.

Assessment of marine resources and the addition of new marine natural reserves as well rehabilitation of the affected areas are already under way as part of its UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030. The term ‘special nature coastal areas’ stands for a new planning classification of areas which includes the most important marine and coastal resources and components. Hence, according to the features of the strategy, “a precise framework needs to be established to guide development and ensure good management of unique resources for present and future generations”.
