MADRID: A delegation representing the Council of Oman is taking part in the 143rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), hosted by the Spanish parliament during November 26-30.

Khalid bin Hilal al Maawali, Chairman of Majlis Ash’shura, delivered the speech of the Council of Oman in which he affirmed that the Sultanate of Oman has played a prominent role in promoting common human values and deepening the bridges of civilisational communication between all peoples, nations and religions.

He added that the Sultanate of Oman joined the rest of the world to mark the International Day for Tolerance which falls on November 6 each year under the theme ‘Diverged by pandemic, converged by tolerance’ in accordance with what was decided by the United Nations, and agreed by all countries. The aim, he said, was to emphasise our constant quest to consolidate a positive image through the message of peace emanating from religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence.

Al Maawali added that the Report on International Religious Freedom praised the Message of Islam exhibition held during the International Day for Tolerance celebrations which stresses the importance of disseminating the culture of tolerance and co-existence among human beings.

Supporting the policy of dialogue and finding peaceful solutions away from division and conflict are fundamental principles between nations that are urged by all races and religions. Today we are in dire need more than ever before to consolidate the culture of cooperation and constructive dialogue to maintain peace and stability. In order to protect our countries, we must stand together and work hand in hand to combat hate speech and contempt for religions to avoid division and social disintegration, Al Maawali said. — ONA
