Muscat: The initiative called ‘Turtle Commandos’, which has been launched by the Environment Authority (EA) last October, continues its efforts to protect sea turtles in the Ras al Hadd reserve in the wilayat of Sur, South Sharqiyah governorate.

The programme witnessed the participation of more than 300 volunteers from different governorates of the Sultanate. The authority launched it with an aim to educated people on the importance of protecting the turtles nesting on the Omani beaches.

In a statement to Oman News Agency (ONA), Ahlam Rashid Al-Miqbaliya, head of the media team in the program, said that the program aims to protect, control and monitor turtles by implementing several activities such as cleaning beaches from waste, encouraging young people to volunteer environmentally and educating the local community not to use lights inside the reserve.

“An analytical study will be carried out at the end of the programme, which will include information about the turtles that have been monitored, the number of baby sea turtles that were returned to the sea, in addition to other information”, she added.
