Oman Fencing Championship begins on Saturday

The inaugural edition of Oman Fencing championship will commence on Saturday at the indoor hall of Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex.


As many as 40 fencers - representing eight clubs including: Muscat, Oman club, Al Nahdha, Qurayat, Al Shabab, Ahli Sidab, Salalah and Masirah - will take part in the championship which is under organisation and supervision of Oman Fencing Committee (OFC).


The kick off competition will be at 9:00 am and the registration will take place half an hour ahead of the competition start.


His Excellency Qais bin Mohammed bin Moosa Al Yousef, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion will be the chief guest of the event.


He will deliver the awards and trophies to the top winners during the final ceremony which will start at 2:00 pm. The preliminary competition round will begin at 9:00 am with Men’s Epee category competition and Foil’s competition category for girls.


All the fencers distributed in groups and the top places from each group will advance to the finals.


On the other hand, OFC chairman, Khalid bin Said al Shuaibi, signed an agreement on Thursday with Chairman of Masirah club, Adil Al Zaari.


The agreement will allow the club to have four fencers representing the team in all the local and aboard championships including Asad al Maskari, Retal al Balushi, Ali al Nabhani and Hajer al Shuaibi.


“It is a great opportunity for Masirah club to start a new sport represented by fencing sport. This agreement with OFC will aim to spread and boost fencing sport and encourage all the members in the club to join and taking part in fencing sport activities. A dedicated thanks to all the efforts made by the OFC chief and team members for introducing this new sports to the clubs.” chief of Masirah club said.


Oman Fencing championship will target all the junior and youth fencers in the clubs. The purpose of the initial edition of the championship is to provide a suitable environment of competition among the fencers.


Also, to give a chance for all the new fencers to enter in the mood of the competitions and select the potential for the national teams.


Five umpires from the Sultanate will officiate in the competitions while the head coach of the national fencing team Hisham Karshood will be the technical head of the event.


Presence of the Tunisian coach during the championship is very significant to evaluate the fencers performance and instructing them to enhance the positive sides and improve the weakness areas.
