70 sites in Oman ideal of bird migration

Muscat: The natural reserves in the Sultanate of Oman have been currently witnessing the arrival of migratory birds from Europe, West, and East Asia, which also marks the beginning of the winter migration season.


More than 400 species of migratory birds are expected to visit until the end of February, and they constitute more than 80 percent of the 532 species of birds recorded and counted in the Sultanate.


The head of the Wetlands Management Department at the Environment Authority that the Sultanate of Oman’s environment, especially the marine environment, is fertile and provides abundant food for these birds. There are 70 sites in the Sultanate that have been identified as important areas for bird migration.


The official added that birds take the path of East Africa and Central Asia to reach the Sultanate, which is one of the large and important paths because


it is the second-largest path in the world for bird migration, stressing that the Sultanate has established a number of laws to preserve wildlife, including to international and regional agreements to preserve and sustain various bird species.
