MUSCAT: Shops and suppliers have been warned against any artificial rise in the prices of commodities in view of the tropical cyclone Shaheen that is advancing towards the Oman shore.

Salim bin Ali Gmana, Chairman of the Consumer Protection Authority, reminded all the commercial establishments in the Sultanate of the need to adhere to laws and regulations related to consumer rights.

“No one will be allowed to take advantage of the situation. If anybody is found to be violating the regulations by raising the prices, they will be booked under the laws”, he said.

He said that the officials at the authority are continuously in communication with various commercial establishments and suppliers in the governorates concerned, and warned them against raising prices.”

The Authority in a statement earlier said it has already chalked out a comprehensive plan including formation of teams of officials to deal with the situation.

“The teams, which will work in alternative shifts in morning and evening, will keep a watch on the markets and prices of commodities and services”, the statement said.

In addition, the officials will follow up on consumer complaints and will interact with owners of commercial establishments to ensure supply of all essential commodities.

“Any breach in the rights of consumers including price rise will be dealt with seriously”, the authority warned.
