Expecting mothers, both Omani nationals and expatriates, got their Covid-19 jabs at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre on Saturday.

This was part of the Sultanate’s marking 4th National and the 3rd World Patient Safety Day under the theme ‘Safe Maternal and Newborn Care’ which is observed on September 17.

The World Patient Safety Day and the vaccination for pregnant women mothers were inaugurated by Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed al Saeedi, Minister of Health, in the presence of World Health Organisation Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Dr Ahmed Alim al Mandhari, WHO’s Regional Director, Dr John Jabbour, WHO Representative to Oman, and officials.

“Several hundreds of mothers-would-be arrived at the Centre to receive their jabs, some for second dose and others for first dose,” said Dr Salma al Amri, focal point of child health in the Directorate General of Medical Services, Muscat Governorate.

“Getting a Covid-19 vaccine can protect you from severe illness from infection and ensure safe childbirth,” said Dr Ramla al Qassabi, a senior medical specialist.

Doctors have further said that vaccination during pregnancy and breastfeeding is very important as it protects women from severe complications from Covid infection and reduces risks of death.

“Vaccination is to be taken after the 1st trimester or 13 weeks and need to have 2 weeks of gap if any other vaccine is taken. In case one had Covid infection, inoculation is suitable after 4 weeks,” says Dr Dilip Singhvi.

Doctors have further said that they can take paracetamol in case of fever, headache, or body aches. One should consult a specialist in case of hypersensitive reaction to any previous vaccine or allergies.
