Oman move to 78th in Fifa ranking for Sept

MUSCAT: Oman national football team progressed into 78th place at Fifa world ranking for September month, two places up from the ranking in May. World football governing body, Fifa, announced the monthly men’s world ranking on Thursday.


The Sultanate football team managed to add six points from the last appearance against Japan and Saudi Arabia in the Asian Qualifiers – Road to Qatar, to reach 1,311 points in the tally at 78th place. Belgium are leading the table with 1,832 points while Brazil are second with 1,811 points and England are in third position with 1,755 points.


Asian heavyweights Iran are the best among the Asian teams with 1,538 points in 22nd place, while Japan are positioned 26th with 1,520 points.


On the other hand, Red Warriors resumed the training sessions through an internal camp on Wednesday to gear up for Australia and Vietnam matches on October 7 and 12 respectively.


The selected players for the camp trained under watchful eyes of Croatian coach Branko Ivankovic. The Oman Football Association (OFA) chairman, Shaikh Salim Said al Wahaibi, attended the opening training session on Wednesday at Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex. The team’s warm-up camp will continue until September 21.



Later, the team will travel to Doha city for an overseas camp ahead of meeting Australia in the same city on October 7. Qatar camp will feature two preparatory games and the opponent teams are not announced yet.


The OFA chairman affirmed after attending the team’s initial training practice in SQSC that the OFA in coordination with related government authorities will provide all the requirements which will assist the team’s top performance in the qualifiers. This support to the national team is extended since Serbia’s camp which resulted with top shows in Japan and Saudi’s fixtures. The support will continue until the last fixture in the qualifiers,” he said.


“The team is featured of players with average age of 25 to 26 years old. We are confident and trust our players experience and technical capabilities. We all watched the team's show in the previous two encounters. Barring the result, our players put up a good show against Saudi Arabia," Al Wahaibi added.
