Rousing reception for Oman's parathlete champion Mohammed Mashaykhi

Oman’s parathlete champion Mohammed bin Jameel al Mashaykhi and the Sultanate’s delegation who took part in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games which concluded recently in Tokyo, were given a rousing welcome by Basil bin Ahmed al Rawas, the Undersecretary of Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth for Sports and Youth, top officials from the Ministry and Oman Paralympic Committee (OPC).


The Sultanate’s parathlete champion and the delegation arrived in Muscat International Airport early morning on Friday.


Al Mashaykhi made Oman proud as he bagged a historic bronze medal in the men’s shot put - F34 class finals at Olympic Stadium in Tokyo. Al Mashaykhi’s triumph at Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games is a historic accomplishment for the Sultanate as he won the first ever medal for Oman in the showpiece event.


After his arrival in home, Al Mashaykhi dedicated his accomplishment to His Majesty Sultan Haitham. “It is my pleasure to dedicate this global accomplishment to His Majesty Sultan Haitham, Oman’s community and Sports parathlete & athletes. The competition was too tough at men’s shot put - F34 class finals especially from Russian and Chinese opponents” he said for media representatives in Airport.


“Despite the injury, I managed to earn this achievement and very proud on myself. This category of Paralympic champions required more support. We have talented and many potential champions. With having more assistance from different government and private sectors, parathletes can achieve more accomplishments for the Sultanate. Also, the support will allow participation with more parathletes in the international events and having more accomplishments,” he added.


Al Mashaykhi ended his remarks that there is no difficulty to achieve gold medal in the Paralympic Games. “ Having the right preparation and support from all the sectors, we can manage to win the gold medals. There is nothing impossible,” he concluded.


Basil bin Ahmed Al Rawas, Undersecretary of the Ministry for Sports and Youth, appreciated the achievement of Muhammad Al Mashaykhi in Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. “Highly appreciation for this historic achievement by the national team player, Mohammad Al Mashaykhi. Registering the Sultanate's name in the Paralympic Games through having bronze medal after a strong competition in which our players proved that he is capable of recording the achievements. Congratulating our champion player on the unprecedented achievement in Paralympics Games,” he added.


The Undersecretary thanked all the national Paralympics team players for their efforts in raising the name of the Sultanate in various sports forums. “The Ministry will continue to support the national parathlete and Oman Paralympic Committee (OPC) to discover, nurturing and refining potential talents which will contribute to the continuation of the achievements of this category in the Gulf, Arab and international sports forums,” he ended.
