MUSCAT: Oman’s promising swimmer Issa al Adawi claimed two gold medals for the Sultanate at the 28th GCC Aquatic Championships in 200 metres and 400 metres freestyle events while his teammate Mohammed al Wahaibi bagged the third gold medal in backstroke 50 metres event.


At Hamad Aquatics Centre in Doha on Sunday, the Sultanate’s swimming team ended their participation with a tally of 13 medals as an outcome from the GCC championship including three gold, five silver and five bronze medals. Oman swimming team was placed in third position in senior category while Kuwait topped the order and hosts Qatar finished runners-up.


All the GCC countries participated in the championships which last for four days from August 19 to 22.


The five silver medals for the Sultanate came through Abdulrahman al Kulaibi who managed to earn two silver medals in 400 metres and 200 metres medley events.


Talented swimmer Muath al Sihbani claimed two silver as well in 50 metres freestyle and 50 metres breaststroke events. The freestyle relay team won silver medal in 4x200 freestyle relay event for senior category.



Young swimmer Hussain Tariq Taha managed to earn two bronze medals in 200 metres and 100 metres breaststroke events. His teammate Mashal al Kulaibi won the bronze in 50 metres freestyle, while Issa al Adawi added another bronze in 800 metres freestyle. The freestyle relay team won bronze medal in 4x100 freestyle relay event.


On the other hand, Taha al Kishry, Oman Swimming Association (OSA) chairman and Fina Bureau member attended the meeting of Fina president Hussain al Musallam with the Qatar Swimming Association (QSA) president and FINA Bureau member Khaleel al Jaber.


The Fina chief appreciated the positive efforts made by the QSA to organise the championship successfully. “Doha has all the facilities and good infrastructure to host the 2023 Fina World Championships and World Masters as the best-ever in history. Doha has the experience to host this mega event,” he said.


The Oman delegation arrived in Muscat on Monday after the successful participation at 28th GCC Aquatic Championships.
