Omanis now constitute 62% of population

Omanis constitute 62.10 per cent out of a total population of 4.459 million in the Sultanate, according to figures available on National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) website.


While the number of Omanis rose to 2,770,900 as of July 27, 2021, expatriates fell to 1,688,900 making 37.90 per cent of the total population.


Muscat Governorate continues to be the home for the largest number of people with 1,309,197 Omanis and 582,025 expatriates till the end of May.


As far as private sector jobs are concerned, there have been 255,012 nationals employed in different sectors with the highest number in the construction sector with 53,731 followed by manufacturing with 32,296 Omanis.


Nearly 6,000 nationals are employed in the health and social welfare sector, while 7,250 work in education.


At the same time, the NCSI statistics show that there has been a fall of 23.7 per cent in the number of expatriate employees in the government sector at 40,273 during the period from May 2020 to May 2021.


In the private sector, they dropped by 11.5 per cent to reach 1,139,988 against 1,148,207 during the same period. The expatriate dependents fell down to 249,570 from 252,681 a year ago.


Bangladeshis continue to be the largest community with 543,182 followed by 483,901 Indians. While there are 185,357 Pakistanis and 46,084 Filipinos, the number of Egyptians and Sri Lankans fell to 30,282 and 19,939, respectively.
