The initial results of the evening lockdown, and the outcome of the complete closure during Eid al Adha, as it completes the second day, show a substantial fall in the number of new Covid-19 cases.
The decision to close commercial establishments as well as restrict the movement of people is reflected in the easing of pressure on intensive care units (ICUs) as well on Covid-19 wards in various hospitals, according to the Ministry of Health.
"It's no wonder the result of people working hard to adhere to the instructions of the authorities has brought down the cases as well as ICU patients," said Dr. Zakaria al Muharrami, Senior Consultant, Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the Sultan Qaboos University (SQU).
"The present situation is very promising in the first days of the closure, as the number of patients is falling sharply, and the number of people being hospitalized has come down," Dr. Zakaria added.
However, the exact number of people infected with Covid-19 and being admitted to hospitals is yet to be known before making a comparative study as statistics will be released after the Eid holidays.
"The present assumptions are from experts and we have noticed that the number of people being infected by the virus is falling, while ICU cases, as well as inpatients, have reduced. This is a very good sign," he said.
The total number of people vaccinated in the Sultanate since the beginning of the national campaign has reached 1,359,65, which is 38 per cent of the total target groups.
