The tilapia fish is one of the suitable species for aquaculture due to its ability to live in basins with low oxygen concentration and feed on many types of natural and artificial foods. It is distinguished by its ability to resist diseases and parasites, and it is one of the many types of crustaceans, including blue, white, black, indigo, and others.
It is considered one of the seafood that contains high amounts of proteins and a low percentage of calories and fats and is useful for body building as it contributes to food security projects.
The Ministry of Agricultural Wealth, Fisheries and Water Resources is also concerned with such projects and provides technical and advisory support and always seeks to develop them. By his personal efforts, Ahmed bin Khalaf Al Maawali, a resident of the Wilayat of Wadi Al Ma’awil in the South Al Batinah Governorate, succeeded in his own project for fish farming by raising (tilapia fish) in a freshwater basin in one of the Wilayat’s farms.
The project aims to take advantage of the fresh water on the farm and exploit some space available in the farm for the production of tilapia fish. The water of fish farming is also used to irrigate crops that contain some fertilizers that are useful for agriculture.
Ahmed says that this private and mini-experiment was established with personal efforts so that I can gain sufficient experience in this field, and then I will open an integrated project in coordination with government and concerned agencies. Such projects contribute to strengthening and diversifying sources of income and creating suitable job opportunities for citizens in addition to exploiting water to grow vegetables and to achieve integration, especially the production of high quality fish.
He added that it is necessary to gain experience and full knowledge of the methods, types and basics of fish farming and to exchange experiences before starting the project. Through this experience I seek to gain knowledge of the nature of work, the cost, as well as providing appropriate feed and nutrition, whether from farm plants or buying some special grains, maintaining water quality and cleanliness of fish basins to study their effects on fish growth, and the control of pests or diseases that may affect them.
