The month of June has been the deadliest for Oman and with no signs of immediate respite, the situation still calls for restraint when it comes to socialization.

The country has reported nearly 700 deaths due to Covid in June, of which 89 of them were in the last two days.

It took just 62 days to cross the 3,000-mark in terms of the death toll from the 2,000th death that was reported on April 28, 2021.

With a total toll of 3,056 deaths, around 1.15 percent of the total infected people in the country have died.

According to statistics, 11.3 per cent or 30, 193 people are still sick of Covid in Oman.

The Ministry of Health (MoH) on Tuesday reported 2,234 new cases and 43 deaths over the past 24 days.

181 patients were admitted to hospitals across the country in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of inpatients to 1,613 including 525 in intensive care units.

The total number of cases registered in the Sultanate has now reached 266,536, including 3,056 deaths.

The total number of recoveries is 232,287 while the recovery rate is 87.5 percent.

While WHO has raised concerns of cases in Oman, it also made it clear

People cannot feel safe just because they had the two doses. “They still need to protect themselves,” said Dr Mariangela Simao, WHO assistant director-general for access to medicines and health products.

“My friend was tested positive despite have two doses of the vaccine. So, it is important to follow government guidelines on safety measures,” said Mohammed al Bulushi, a senior citizen in Muttrah.

“People need to continue to use masks consistently, be in ventilated spaces, hand hygiene... the physical distance, avoid crowding. This still continues to be extremely important, even if you’re vaccinated when you have a community transmission ongoing.”

Vaccines will be complementary to other preventive measures as jabs will not target all populations at once and there will always be risk groups who are not vaccinated thus not prevented unless they comply with preventive measures, the Ministry of Health (MOH) has said.

"In addition, information is not yet available as to how long the vaccine will be protective to vaccinated people and when this protection will disappear. Therefore, the person still has to wear the mask, apply physical distance, and obligate to isolation when indicated," MOH said.

"It is too early to tell whether Covid-19 vaccines will provide long-term protection, or how long the vaccine will last to protect the body, and further research is needed to answer this question, but it is known so far that the vaccine prevents the disease symptoms and reduces complications,” MOH said.
