Project for growing wild plants begins in Dhofar

SALALAH: The first phase of a project for the plantation of wild plants was launched in Dhofar Governorate, on Monday and continues till July 4.


The first phase of the project, organized by the Environment Authority with broad community participation, involves sowing of wild plant seeds after large amounts of seeks have been collected in cooperation with individuals and entities.


Engineer Mohammed bin Salim Hardan, head of the team tasked with collecting and sowing the seeds at the Directorate-General of Environment in Dhofar Governorate, said the locations for sowing the seeds were selected in five wilayats: Dhalkout, Rakhyout, Mirbat, Salalah and Taqa.


The team began collecting the seeds in April and has since managed to collect 350 kg of wild plants seeds from the mountains of Dhofar to be used in the first phase of the project and the remaining seeds will be used in the nurseries of Directorate-General of Environment in Dhofar Governorate, the official said.


He added: “We will monitor the areas where the seeds have been sowed and prepare a monthly report about the process. The collection of seeks will resume in September when the wild plants bloom in order to collect a large quantity of seeds.” — ONA
