The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MHT) has signed an agreement with the Omani Liquefied Natural Gas (Oman LNG) Company to renovate the ancient city of Qalhat in the Wilayat of Sur. The first phase will consists of establishing management and conservation at the site, pathways for visitors, signboards, viewing platforms and other basic facilities.
The archaeological site of Qalhat is one of the most important archaeological sites that was included in the World Heritage List in 2017.
This funding represents a model for strengthening the partnership between the heritage sector and the private sector to finance and support projects that will achieve economic and social sustainability, provide job opportunities, and achieve returns that benefit large segments of the local community.
The cost of the project is RO3, 11, 067.
MHT has been working since 2008 to implement a number of work programs in the ancient city of Qalhat, including archaeological surveys and excavations, in addition to the restoration and maintenance of many important monuments at the site.
