MUSCAT: Dialysis centres provide one of main services offered by the Ministry of Health to society.
Currently as many as 24 dialysis centres operate in different governorates of the Sultanate, sparing patients the need to go abroad for treatment.
One of the longest serving and largest dialysis centres is the one in the Wilayat of Bausher.
Dr Yaqoub Ahmed al Maimani, Head of Bausher Dialysis Centre, said that the facility, opened in 1998, started operating with 28 beds serving 120 patients. By 2020, Bausher centre’s capacity rose to 52 beds serving 350 patients round the clock, he added.
Al Maimani pointed out that 2,500 patients suffer kidney failure in the Sultanate, with more than 600 of them in Muscat Governorate and receive medical attention in the governorates. In Muscat, kidney failure patients get treatment in Bausher and A’Seeb, in addition to a dialysis unit attached to Qurayat Hospital. The three facilities in Muscat have a total of 95 dialysis beds, Al Maimani added.
He said the Ministry of Health tries its best to offer treatment to patients in their respective wilayats, and, accordingly, increased the number of centres (to 24 having a total of 373 beds), while the facilities in general serve all the 2,500 kidney failure patients. -- ONA
