The employees, comprising both citizens and expatriates, at the Ministry of Information got the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine on Thursday.

Members of the staff took turns and presented themselves at the new TV and Radio building from morning to get themselves vaccinated and take part in the national vaccination drive.

Nearly 1,000 staff were vaccinated on Wednesday while others had already taken their first and second doses at various public vaccination programmes.

"The response from the Ministry of Information staff has been overwhelming and the support is laudable," said Dr Mohammed al Hadhrami.

Meanwhile, the Sultanate reported 1,886 new cases and 32 deaths on Thursday. The total number of positive Covid-19 cases has risen to 256,542 and the deaths reached 2848, the Ministry of Health said.

The ministry added that 1,733 new cases have recovered, bringing the total number to 224,077 recoveries.

Over the past 24 hours, 189 cases were hospitalised, and the number of hospitalised Covid patients stands at 1,541, of them 464 are in intensive care units (ICUs).

Dr Saif Salim al Abri, Director General of Disease Surveillance and Control at the Ministry of Health, while addressing the Supreme Committee press conference said new target groups for vaccination would be announced next week.

"Currently, those in the age group of 45 and above are getting the vaccination from Ministry of Health and we keep adding newer target groups from time to time.

Currently, Oman has given emergency use licence for four vaccines, and they are Pfizer-BioNTech , Oxford/AstraZeneca, Sputnik and Sinovac.
