Primary aluminum output from Sohar Aluminium’s $2.4 billion mega industrial complex in Suhar hit a record 396,992 tons last year – the highest in the company’s history.

This compares with a hot metal production of 390,516 tonnes in 2019.

The new record was one of several achievements of the past year that were applauded at the 2020 Mumtaz Recognition Scheme organised by the company as a virtual event recently.

The event was attended by the CEO of the company, members of the Executive Committee, and the Management Team.

The achievers, including top nominees and winners in the company’s six strategic objectives, were thanked, and applauded by the leaders of the company for their outstanding work and dedication.

Engineer Said al Masoudi, SA’s CEO praised the nominees and winners for their exceptional efforts and hard work and reiterated the importance of sustaining the benefits and results that were achieved last year.

The company sustained its high level of Primary Aluminium quality in the 396,929 tons that were produced in 2020, the highest production record in its history.

It continued the successful deployment of the Lean Six Sigma methodology by implementing several key projects through its Green and Black Belts. All these achievements were crowned by winning the 1st position for His Majesty the Sultan’s Award for Industrial Excellence 2021.

Also in 2020, the company witnessed great achievements in its Environment, Health and Safety, Productivity and Incremental Improvements, People and Community, Innovation and Growth, Financial Strength, and Customer Satisfaction strategic objectives.

One of the major achievements was the outstanding results of the Value Creation Programme that saw savings above set targets.

Also, the Injury Rate, Significant Potential Incidents, and Hydrogen Fluoride Emissions witnessed substantial decrease throughout the year.

Established in 2004, Sohar Aluminium is jointly owned by the Omani government (40 per cent) represented by OQ – Oman’s integrated energy group; Abu Dhabi National Energy Company PJSC – TAQA (40 per cent), and leading global mining group Rio Tinto (20 per cent). The Suhar plant supplies 60 per cent of its production to the local downstream customers in the form of hot metal, contributing significantly to In-Country Value.
