MUSCAT, JUNE 5

Since the start of the pandemic early last year, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP) has received more than 30 applications for registration of Intellectual Property Rights in fields of Covid19 prevention, sterilisation, disease surveillance devices, treatment methods, personal protective clothing and other proposed solutions.

According to Nidaa bint Yaqoub al Tamimiah, a patent inspection specialist at the Ministry’s National Intellectual Property Office, the applications also related to technology and communications-related innovations.

While some of the innovations were the work of SMEs and student companies, others were invented by large organisations. Many of the inventions have since been put to commercial use in the Sultanate, she noted. Over the 2015–2020 timeframe, the National Intellectual Property Office received a total of 110 applications for IPR protection, she added.
