Helping harness further economic value from Oman’s date palm and other farm resources, wholly state-owned Nakheel Oman Development Oman has signed an agreement with Oman Environmental Services Holding Co (be’ah) that will allow for the conversion of green waste into commercially valuable animal feed.
The agreement was signed by Eng Tariq bin Ali al Amri, CEO - be’ah, with Ali bin Said al Araimi, General Manager -- Nakheel Oman. Under the pact, green waste accumulated at the Barka Engineered Landfill of be’ah, will be recycling into pelleted animal feed.
be’ah’s CEO said: “We are pleased to announce this partnership with Nakheel Oman, which will contribute to the sustainable utilization of resources and promote the principles of the circular economy through the recycling of green waste to produce commercially valuable products that would support the national economy and conserve the environment of our beautiful Oman.”
Ali al Araimi of Nakheel Oman stated: “At Nakheel Oman, we have adopted a circular economy business model that is committed to utilising the products and by-products of the Date Palm Tree and general green waste. In pursuit of the same, the company has entered into a collaboration with be’ah to retrieve the value from the green waste received at be’ah’s Barka landfill and produce pelleted animal feed utilising green waste and dates.”
Nakheel Oman is constructing a major animal feed plant at Barka with a production capacity of 48,000 metric tonnes per annum in the first phase.
Green waste sourced from the Barka landfill is estimated to reach about 100 metric tonnes per day.
The plant is expected to commence commercial activities before the end of 2022.
Nakheel Oman is a joint venture created by the partnership of the Diwan of Royal Court (represented by the Directorate General of Million Date Palm Plantation Project) and Oman National Investments Development Company (Tanmia).
Nakheel Oman has since become Oman’s flagship producer of dates, as well as one of the world largest producers of date palm products and byproducts.
Nakheel aims to invest in date palm, healthy food and sustainable agriculture activities.
