The Oman U-15 basketball team may withdraw from the Under-15 GCC Basketball Championship which is scheduled to be held in Manama city, Bahrain from August 10 to 18.

The decision may be announced as soon as the team is out of training sessions since more than three months due to suspension of sporting activities.

According to a source, the Oman Basketball Association (OBA) communicated with the Ministry of Culture, sports and Youth for providing an approval to the team to resume the training sessions two months back.

The source added that the ministry is stuck with the previous announcement of suspension of all the sporting activities until further notice and basketball activity is part of it. “ We are looking for an exceptional approval and hope the team can return to the field soon to gear up for the event”, the source ended.

The Under-15 GCC Basketball Championship is a significant championship for the team as this event will act as Asian qualification for the GCC zone to the U-15 Asian basketball championship. The first and second placed teams in the championship will seal spots in the top Asian basketball event.

The head coach of Oman U-15 team, Mohammed al Qusaimi, was supervising all the training sessions since last January. The team was depending on the short domestic camps during weekends at Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex. The former coach of Nizwa club had selected the right and talented faces to represent the Sultanate team squad. After a series of the short camps, the head coach was in proper stage to identify the top faces for the starting list. The experienced national basketball coach stated in a previous statement to Oman Daily Observer that : ‘‘It is always better to have the training on the field especially with players in under age of 15 years. Also, having an external camp is quite difficult and costly during this tough period. Therefore, we hope to obtain the permission from the Ministry and Supreme Committee to resume the training and our warm-up session for the GCC assignment’’.
