Muscat: The Sultanate is expected to receive some 200,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccine per week starting from June.
This was stated by Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed al Saeedi, Minister of Health, who confirmed that vaccine shipments will continue to arrive in the Sultanate, expressing his hope that the vaccination rates will cross 35 per cent up from 30 per cent of citizens and residents by the end of August.
The minister called on the parents of Grade 12 students to encourage them to get the Covid-19 vaccine, noting that the disease infects all age groups and not only the elderly.
Meanwhile, the Sultanate reported considerably fewer cases on Wednesday, and daily deaths also limited to a single digit.
The Ministry of Health announced 696 new cases and 9 deaths, a decline from 812 and 13 deaths on Tuesday.
The total number of cases registered in the Sultanate has now reached 20,7805, including 2,228 deaths. At the same time, the recovery rate remains below 92.5 percent.
Seventy-three people were admitted to hospitals across the country, bringing the total number of inpatients to 681. The number of patients in intensive care units went up to 252 from 244 on Wednesday.
Of the cases reported in the country, 390 were from Muscat, 99 from North Al Batinah, and 79 from South Al Batinah. Again on Wednesday, most deaths (4) were reported from South Al Sharqiyah.
VACCINATIONS
The Ministry of Education has started preparations to vaccinate General Diploma Students (GED) and the teaching, administrative, and technical staff.
A meeting was held between the ministries of education and health officials to discuss preparations for immunization of students.
The vaccination programme is important as schools prepare for Grade 12 exams by following the guidelines issued by the Supreme Committee to limit the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. The under-secretaries from both ministries attended the meeting.
The meeting discussed the mechanism of immunisation for students and teachers, and the plan includes automatic registration of all GED students through the Tarassud Plus programme, with the date to be announced in the coming days.
It should be noted that many countries are calling for mandatory immunisation against Covid-19, including for students.
The ministries called on all parents of GED students to encourage their children to get vaccinated. (With ONA inputs)
