Nizwa: Prominent Omani conservationist and environmental authority and scholar, Haitham al Rawahi will feature on a Global Three-Day Biodiversity Festival from May 20th to 23rd, during which more than 150 prominent conservation figures will speak of their unique experiences with the aim of inspiring conservation and environmental awareness among all ages, societies, and cultures.
The event, details of which can be found on their website https://www.globalbiofest.com/ features such notables as ‘Plastiki’s David de Rothschild; ‘Kakapo’ conservationist Andrew Digby; Amazon explorer and film-maker Celine Cousteau; World Youth Prize winner Kethkashan Basu; Cave diver Jill Heinerth; ‘Greehouse to Icehouse,’ with Jane Francis; Antarctic diver Nadia Fronteir; Educationalist Maritza Morales Casanova, Al Rawahi, and so many more extraordinary people, doing extraordinary deeds, with the objective of a complete global environmental audit of the planet.
Prominent in promoting the Omani Natural History Lecture Series, Dr Nigel Winser of the Royal Geographical Society in London noted that, “Wildlife Biologist Dr Al Rawahi, of the Office for Conservation of the Environment (OCE), of the Diwan of the Royal Court, captivated a knowledgeable audience at the Third Natural History event while sharing his field biology experiences in the Sultanate, concerning the endangered Arabian Tahr and Nubian Ibex.”
Al Rawahi is a passionate advocate of, and participant in field research of endangered species of the Sultanate, developing an impressive body of research in habitat identification and diversity towards ensuring the future of Oman’s impressive catalogue of flora and fauna, its plants, and animals. Focusing on species distribution and occupancy models, aided by camera-trapping, geological and vegetation audits the local scientists are seeking an informed accommodation between human development planning and conservation imperatives. His presentation to the global event will be on the “Arabian Tahr – The Hidden Jewels of Oman’s Hajar Mountains,” and will update their conservation efforts to date, including the most recent activities of the OCE.
