Indonesia's military chief Air Marshall Hadi Tjahjanto said on Sunday that search teams had found the submarine which sank earlier this week, killing 53 people on board.
"With this authentic proof, we can confirm that KRI Nanggala 402 has sunk and all of its 53 sailors have died on duty," Tjahjanto told a press conference.
The submarine was taking part in a military exercise off the coast of Bali when it lost contact early on Wednesday.
Oxygen supplies on board were only sufficient to last until Saturday morning, and items from the submarine were found in the water over the weekend.
