Subhash retains men’s title at ISC tennis tournament

MUSCAT: Talented teenager Subash Pillai retained the men’s singles title at the Falcon Insurance Company-sponsored Annual Tennis Tournament organised by the Indian Social Club. In a repeat of last year’s final, the defending champion dominated the final and outplayed second seed Yash Tanna to emerge winner with a 6-4, 4-2 (retired) result when Yash retired with a sore shoulder. Subash and Yash played positive attacking tennis with Subash maintaining a higher degree of consistency. Scores went neck-and-neck until Subash earned the crucial break to win the first set. Subash scored the early break in the second set and pressure told on Yash whose unforced errors piled on the agony. With Subash leading 4-2, Yash conceded the match with a sore shoulder. One hopes that Yash will be fit to contest the boys’ under-16 singles final and then join Subash in the men’s doubles final which were scheduled to be played last night.
