Harmful substance found in melamine tableware

MUSCAT: The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) said it took samples of the melamine plastic tableware at the local market to test them and ensure that they are safe for use and free of the harmful formaldehyde substance. Sami bin Salim al Sahib, Acting Director-General of the Directorate-General for Standards and Metrology at the MoCI said that the tests found that some products contain the harmful formaldehyde substance. He added that the ministry has coordinated with the Directorate-General of Customs at the ROP to ban the entry of any consignments of such materials unless they are free of the harmful formaldehyde substance and that they are fit for use.
