The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has warned the public against using fireworks during the Eid celebrations. There will be close surveillance of borders to prevent smuggling of fireworks into the Sultanate. “Those trying to smuggle fireworks would be tracked down and legal action initiated against them,” said the ROP. The authorities, in cooperation with the ROP, have foiled several attempts to smuggle fireworks into the country. Two days ago, the Customs Directorate of North Al Batinah arrested a national for trying to bring in a huge quantity of firecrackers in his vehicles. A total of 1,206 boxes containing firecrackers and other commodities were seized. Legal action was taken against him. The Common Customs Law of the GCC states, which is applicable to all the GCC member countries, considers fireworks a prohibited item. The smuggling of fireworks is punishable by a jail term of three years and fine, or either of the two penalties. ROP also asked parents to educate their children about the risks that firecrackers pose. Zainab al Nassri
