Ball drop rings in 2018

Locals and tourists braved frigid temperatures to watch the iconic ball drop at New York’s Times Square on New Year’s Eve. The more than 1 million revellers had to bundle up as the temperature dropped below minus 12 degrees Celsius at midnight. Times Square saw live performances by artists including Mariah Carey, Sugarland and Nick Jonas. New York police had beefed up security for the celebrations and crowds had to pass dogs sniffing for explosives and were screened twice before entering the area. — dpa
