MUSCAT, FEB 11 - Mohammed bin Salim al Tobi, Minister of Environment and Climate Affairs, presided at celebrations marking the 12th anniversary of the founding of Gulf Mining Group (GMG), which currently ranks among the largest independent, privately-owned mining and mineral processing corporations in the Middle East. The celebrations, held at the Intercontinental Muscat at the weekend, were attended by the Chairman and Board of Directors of Gulf Mining Group, as well as senior management executives and staff of its Muscat office. Long-serving employees of the organisers were feted with awards and certificates on the occasion as well. Established in 2005 by Abdullah Sulaiman al Hadi, GMG began operations as a miner of chrome ore before receiving a coveted license to export the commodity — the first privately owned Omani firm to be granted this opportunity. It has since diversified its interests into other minerals and other activities, encompassing manganese, marble, limestone, iron ore, laterite, shipping, minerals trading, and hospitality services. Starting out with 5 employees in 2005, GMG now has around 1,200 employees on its rolls. The Group’s assets in the Sultanate include a chrome upgradation plant, ferrochrome smelter, string of marble quarries, and warehousing facilities as well. Besides Oman, the Group also has a presence in a number of countries around the world.
