American academy elects TRC sec-gen as member

MUSCAT: The American Academy of Arts and Sciences has elected Dr Hilal bin Ali al Hinai, Secretary-General of The Research Council (TRC), as an International Honorary Member for the Academy. Established in the 1780, the Academy is one of the oldest learned societies in the US. Getting elected to its membership is a recognition to the researchers and scholars who excel in their areas. The Academy is also a leading centre for independent political research. It elects its members through selecting among people with the greatest achievements in the areas of science, studies, business, public affairs and arts, to conduct the studies that meet the needs of the community. The Academy focuses on higher education and research in science and human sciences. It is worth mentioning that, TRC Secretary-General, previously served as a director of the Water Research Centre of Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) and an Associate Lecturer in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department at the University. Dr Hilal is a holder of the Bachelor’s Degree in Manufacturing Systems Engineering from the University of Bradford in 1986. He received his Master’s and PhD degrees from the Applied Energy Department of Cranfield Institute of Technology in the UK. In addition to his educational responsibilities, he was appointed as an Academic Assistant for Innovation and Industrial Linkages at SQU. Dr Hilal’s research interests are mainly focused on solar energy and desalination, with a special focus on solar desalination and solar-powered cooling techniques for buildings in hot climates. Commenting on the election of Dr Hilal al Hinai, Professor Geraldine Richmond, Presidential Chair in Science and Professor of Chemistry at the University of Oregon, said, “I convey my heartfelt congratulations on the election of the Secretary-General of The Research Council as an International Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.” “It is so wonderful to see his hard work and devotion to building the science and engineering enterprise in Oman being recognised by such a prestigious organisation,” she added.
