Rahma Alkalbani - Muscat, jan 1 - Oman’s newest harbour — Suwaiq Port in North Al Batinah Governorate — has handled as many as 44 cargo vessels since it was launched last year. According to Marafi — part of ASYAD Group — the facility handled around 9,000 tonnes of cargo as of end-2018. “Since its inception, Suwaiq Port received 44 boats — most of them wooden launches that began arrival at the port at the start of operations. These wooden boats have since given way to cargo vessels and barges,” said Marafi in a tweet. “The port is looking forward to an exceptional year in 2019 with demand and maritime traffic expected to increase,” it added. Among the commodities being handled at Suwaiq Port are merchandise, livestock, and fruit and vegetables from regional markets. It is also expected to serve as a platform for private sector investment in support services within and around the port.
