MUSCAT: Khoula Hospital, represented by the Orthopaedic Department, has performed the first arthroscopic hip joint surgery at the level of the Ministry of Health institutions on a patient admitted to the hospital. Dr Suwailem al Ghanami, Joint Surgery and Sports Injuries Consultant at Khoula Hospital, said: “This procedure has been performed on a patient who had suffered a sport injury in the hip joint. All non-operative measures had been taken for the patient, but was not enough for healing”. Dr Al Ghanami added that arthroscopy was provided for such procedures. He said the operation lasted for four hours and the patient left the hospital the next day. This new technology is a qualitative leap in the health services in the Sultanate. The arthroscopic hip joint surgery is technically difficult and it was not available for the patients as such procedures were previously performed by the surgical operation. With the advancements in hip joint arthroscopy, diagnosis and treatment of hip diseases have become easy to perform and that too with minimal side effects. — ONA
