Fumigation not harmful to humans

MUSCAT, JAN 14 - Allaying concerns raised by a section of society, the Ministry of Health (MoH) has said the chemicals used in the fumigation of mosquitoes are not harmful to humans and plants. MoH and Muscat Municipality have embarked on a two-week campaign to eliminate the dengue-causing Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes. Dr Huda al Siyabiyah, Head of Social Initiatives at Ministry of Health, said the chemicals used in fumigation are subjected to quality checks and they pose no danger to humans or animals. “Teams have been given clear instructions. Households will be cleared of people before the fumigation. The chemicals will not be sprayed in areas where animals are grazing.” “All safety precautions are in place,” said Dr Huda. “We have formed effective teams in coordination with both public and private sectors in an attempt to eradicate the Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which cause dengue,” she said. The campaign, which covers 100 households and 25,000 facilities, is progressing at a fast pace. The task force carrying out the campaign comprises 1,000 well-trained and qualified members from various government organisations.
