MUSCAT: The Muttrah Cable Car project commenced operations on Sunday, offering visitors panoramic views of the historic Muttrah waterfront, Port Sultan Qaboos and the surrounding areas.
The project is expected to boost commercial activity in Muttrah Souq and the Waterfront Area, one of the capital's major tourist attractions.
Omanis, expatriates and tourists who spoke to the Observer at the three cable car stations on Sunday welcomed the new experience, expressing satisfaction with the smooth ride.
A single ticket allows visitors to travel from the Port Station to the Mountain Station, before taking a separate ride from there to the Hay Al Ward (Rose Bay) Station.
Recreational facilities have been developed at the Mountain Station, including Mini Oman, restaurants, cafes and a selfie zone.
The stations feature visitor reception and ticketing facilities, commercial spaces, restaurants and cafes, recreational facilities, souvenir shops, and areas dedicated to art and business activities.
The Mountain Station also houses the Muttrah Digital House, a cultural facility showcasing the history and heritage of Muttrah and Muscat through digital projection technologies, visual effects and artificial intelligence. The facility offers an experience combining knowledge and entertainment.
The cable car route extends around 3km, connecting three main stations: the Port Station, the Mountain Station and the Hay Al Ward (Rose Bay) Station. The journey takes approximately 15 minutes.
The project has 18 cabins, comprising 16 standard cabins and two VIP cabins, with a declared capacity of up to 800 passengers per hour, making it one of Oman's anticipated tourism attractions.
Line 1, connecting the Port and Mountain stations, operates 10 cabins, while six cabins serve Line 2 between the Mountain and Rose Bay stations.
