MUSCAT: Oman have secured their place in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2027 despite enduring a miserable finish to their Cricket World Cup League 2 campaign, with a superior net run rate (NRR) ensuring they finished ahead of Namibia in the race for the final automatic qualification spot.
Wednesday's concluding fixture against hosts United Arab Emirates marked the end of the 2024-2026 League 2 cycle, with Oman entering the match knowing that only an exceptionally heavy defeat could jeopardise their fourth-place position.
Although Sulakshan Kulkarni's men suffered their seventh consecutive defeat as they lost by 42 runs, their earlier results provided enough of a cushion to keep them ahead of Namibia, with both teams finishing on 33 points from 36 matches.
Oman's net run rate (NRR) of -0.224 proved decisive against Namibia's -0.278, securing the final automatic berth in the 10-team World Cup Qualifier.
On Wednesday, Oman went into the game knowing that only a defeat by more than 120 runs, or UAE chasing down an Oman-set target in approximately 23 overs or fewer, would push them behind Namibia on net run rate.
Oman sent the hosts to bat first, who scored 226/8. Skipper Rahul Chopra (47) and Basil Hameed (43) were the main run-getters. Oman spinners Shakeel Ahmed (3/42), Samay Shrivastava (2/53) and Jay Odedra (1/51) were among the wickets along with pacer Hassnain Shah (2/53).
Oman’s chase never gained the desired momentum and the batters fumbled again, barring Mujibur Ali (65) and Hammad Mirza (29) as they were restricted to 184/9.
The United States, Scotland and the Netherlands had already booked their places, finishing first, second and third respectively with 49, 45 and 44 points.
LOSS OF FORM
While qualification represents an important achievement, Oman's alarming loss of form towards the end of the competition will be a concern ahead of the next stage.
The team had an opportunity to seal their top-four finish six matches earlier during their home tri-series on October 13 but failed to capitalise, losing three of their final four matches in that leg against Nepal and Canada.
Their struggles continued in the UAE, where they suffered further defeats against the hosts and the Netherlands. Across their last two tri-series, Oman managed just one victory, leaving their qualification hopes dependent on the points accumulated earlier in the campaign.
The seven-match losing streak represents a frustrating conclusion for a side that had been firmly in contention for automatic qualification for much of the competition.
Nevertheless, their superior net run rate ultimately ensured that the late-season collapse did not cost them a place in the next stage.
TOUGHER CHALLENGE AWAITS
Oman will now turn their attention to the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Qualifier, scheduled from February 26 to March 21, 2027, with South Africa and Namibia hosting the 10-team tournament.
The competition will feature former world champions West Indies and Ireland, alongside the four direct qualifiers from League 2 and four teams emerging from the qualifying play-off.
Namibia, Nepal, Canada and UAE will have to take the play-off route, joining the leading teams from the two Challenge League groups. Jersey and Kuwait progressed from Group A, while Italy and Uganda emerged from Group B.
The 10-team qualifier will determine the final four participants at the expanded 14-team 2027 World Cup, co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
The qualifier winner will advance directly to the World Cup group stage, while the teams finishing second, third and fourth will contest a three-match Super Series in Namibia. The winner of that series will claim the final group-stage position.
Brief scores: UAE 226/8 (Rahul Chopra 47, Basil Hameed 43; Shakeel Ahmed 3/42, Hassnain Shah 2/53, Samay Shrivastava 2/53) beat Oman 184/9 (Mujibur Ali 65, Hammad Mirza 29; Muhammad Rohid 2/21, Awais Ali Shah 2/23, Khuzaima Tanveer 2/21, Aayan Afzal Khan 2/31).
