On November 2, Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks in Beijing with His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, who is paying a state visit to China. As the first visit to China by an Omani head of state in the 48 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, the visit marks a major milestone in the history of bilateral ties. More importantly, it provides fresh strategic guidance and strong top-level impetus for taking the China-Oman strategic partnership to a new level.
The friendship between China and Oman has deep historical roots. For centuries, the two countries have been connected by the ancient Maritime Silk Road, through which merchants, goods, ideas and cultures travelled between the East and the West. Today, that historical connection is being given new meaning as China’s high-quality Belt and Road Initiative aligns with Oman Vision 2040. The two countries are demonstrating that an ancient friendship can generate new opportunities in the modern era.
During the talks, the two heads of state witnessed the signing of cooperation documents covering a wide range of emerging and cutting-edge fields, including industrial and supply chains, green development, digital finance, artificial intelligence and the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System. These agreements show that China-Oman cooperation is no longer confined to traditional energy trade. Instead, it is expanding into high technology, digitalisation, green development and other sectors with strong growth potential.
This transformation is significant for both countries. As Oman pursues economic diversification under Oman Vision 2040, cooperation with China can help create new opportunities in manufacturing, logistics, technology, renewable energy and digital industries. For China, Oman’s strategic location at the crossroads of the Arabian Peninsula, the Indian Ocean and the wider Middle East makes the country an important partner in strengthening connectivity and promoting high-quality cooperation. Such cooperation is not simply about trade and investment; it is ultimately about creating better development opportunities and improving the well-being of the two peoples.
The importance of China-Oman relations is even more evident against the backdrop of profound global changes and an evolving situation in the Middle East. At a time when geopolitical tensions and conflicts continue to challenge regional stability, China has consistently advocated resolving disputes through political and diplomatic means and maintaining that the Middle East should not become an arena for major-power rivalry.
Oman, known for its balanced and pragmatic diplomacy, has likewise played a constructive role in promoting dialogue and easing regional tensions. The two countries share a commitment to mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and dialogue among civilisations. Oman highly values China’s principled and impartial position and firmly adheres to the one-China principle. Meanwhile, China respects Oman’s independent development path and supports its efforts to achieve economic diversification and modernisation.
The strong mutual support between the two sides on issues concerning their respective core interests has laid a solid foundation for political trust. It also demonstrates that China-Oman cooperation can contribute not only to economic development, but also to regional peace and stability and to the building of a more just and equitable global governance system.
With favourable winds filling the sails, the journey ahead is promising.
The historic visit by His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik provides a new starting point for China-Oman relations. By carrying forward their millennia-old friendship, strengthening people-to-people ties and expanding practical cooperation, the two countries can better align their respective development strategies and unlock new potential for cooperation.
From the ancient Maritime Silk Road to today’s shared pursuit of modernisation, the relationship between China and Oman has evolved with the times while remaining rooted in mutual respect and mutual benefit. Looking ahead, China and Oman are well positioned to continue working hand in hand on their respective paths towards development and modernisation, turning their time-tested friendship into new opportunities for shared growth and common prosperity, and opening an even brighter new chapter in China-Oman cooperation.
