MUSCAT: The Ministry of Social Development, in partnership with Al Jisr Foundation for Charitable Works, inaugurated a protected paper recycling production workshop at the Vocational Rehabilitation Centre in Al Seeb.
The ceremony was held under the auspices of Qais bin Mohammed al Yousef, Chairman of the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones.
The initiative aims to transform the centre’s existing paper recycling facility into a sustainable production workshop, providing vocational training and employment opportunities for graduates of vocational rehabilitation centres with mild and moderate intellectual disabilities.
The workshop seeks to empower people with disabilities economically and professionally by providing sustainable employment opportunities suited to their abilities and skills, while strengthening their community participation and improving their quality of life.
The project aims to benefit 35 people with disabilities. Its operational programme includes specialised training in paper recycling, the use of equipment and machinery, and the development of professional and behavioural skills, while ensuring a safe working environment.
Dr Abdullah bin Hamoud al Harthi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Social Development for Persons with Disabilities Affairs, said the workshop marked an important step in moving beyond training and skills development towards actual production and broader economic and social empowerment.
He said the initiative reflects cooperation between the Ministry of Social Development, Al Jisr Foundation for Charitable Works and the Ministry of Labour, bringing together social empowerment and environmental sustainability.
Dr Nadia bint Ali al Ajmi, Director-General of the Directorate-General of Centres for the Care and Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities at the Ministry of Social Development, said the project demonstrated how partnerships between government institutions, civil society and the private sector could create meaningful development opportunities.
She said the initiative would provide a supportive working environment that promotes independence and self-confidence while enabling beneficiaries to participate actively in economic and community activities.
The workshop will develop a sustainable production model by recycling waste paper and converting it into products for the local market. The initiative is also expected to improve production efficiency, enhance product quality and generate income to support the project's continuity and provide financial incentives to beneficiaries.
It will further promote environmental awareness, reduce paper waste and encourage sustainable production practices. — ONA
