MUSCAT: The Ministry of Energy and Minerals has issued a policy requiring high-energy-consuming entities to appoint qualified Omani energy efficiency officers, seeking to curb waste, lower operating costs and improve resource management.
The Oman Net Zero Centre will issue a regulatory framework defining the policy’s scope, implementation requirements and procedures.
Under the policy, designated officers will monitor energy consumption, analyse data, identify potential efficiency gains and oversee improvement plans. They will also measure the results of energy-saving initiatives.
Eng Salim bin Nasser al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, said effective consumption management must accompany the expansion of electricity production and diversification of energy sources to strengthen energy security and support economic growth.
The policy places energy management within institutional responsibilities by assigning qualified Omani professionals to track consumption and identify opportunities to improve performance.
Al Aufi said implementation would require commitment from management and the inclusion of energy efficiency in operational plans and investment decisions.
Improving efficiency offers organisations an opportunity to reduce costs and strengthen competitiveness, while helping the wider economy derive greater value from its energy resources, he added.
The policy also seeks to develop specialised national expertise and reduce carbon emissions, supporting Oman Vision 2040 and the Sultanate of Oman’s target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
The ministry said the initiative forms part of broader efforts to improve energy management across sectors and encourage organisations to adopt practices that reduce consumption and waste. — ONA
