MUSCAT: The inaugural Oman Fitness Championship will be held at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher on November 26, offering a new competitive platform for the country’s growing fitness community.
Organised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth (MoCSY), the championship will feature individual and two-person team competitions, with around 100 athletes expected in 50 teams. Registration and a technical briefing are scheduled for November 25, followed by the competitions and awards ceremony the next day.
Details were announced at a press conference at Wyndham Garden Muscat Al Khuwair under the auspices of Faisal bin Abdullah al Rawas, Chairman of the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The occasion also witnessed the signing of sponsorship and partnership agreements with private sector supporters.
Al Rawas said the championship would promote Oman while creating potential economic opportunities. He expressed hope that its debut would lay the foundation for future editions with wider international participation, highlighting the private sector’s role in supporting sporting initiatives.
Ammar bin Salim al Hosni, Chairman of the Organising Committee, said the event reflected growing interest in fitness, the expansion of gyms and training groups, and increasing demand for structured competition.
“Our three main objectives are to promote a fitness culture, identify sporting talent and establish a national championship that can continue to grow,” he said.
Participation is open to Omanis and residents of Arab nationalities, subject to eligibility requirements. The programme includes an individual professional category and two-person team events, testing endurance, speed, strength and physical capacity.
Athletes will receive guidelines on competition requirements, movement standards and scoring. Al Hosni said judging would follow consistent criteria, with a formal procedure for technical appeals to ensure fairness and transparency.
TEAM EVENTS FOR WOMEN
Women can participate in team competitions in the inaugural edition, while dedicated women's categories may be introduced in future depending on demand. Organisers also hope to develop suitable competitions for persons with disabilities in coordination with the relevant authorities.
Preparations include medical support, emergency response arrangements and competition area management. Participants must declare their health and physical readiness, while those under 18 require parental or guardian consent.
Beyond the competition, organisers aim to build a database of participants and performance levels to identify promising athletes and strengthen cooperation with gyms and coaches. Future partnerships could provide outstanding competitors with further training and opportunities at Gulf, regional and international levels.
Prize details will be announced through official channels. Al Hosni said feedback from athletes, coaches, judges and spectators would help shape future editions, with safety, fair competition and participant satisfaction remaining priorities.
“Our ambition is to establish an annual event that athletes look forward to, with categories and participation expanding gradually,” he said.
