MUSCAT, OCT 26
The Wings Handball Championship begins on Monday at Oman Club’s indoor hall, bringing together four domestic clubs in a competition designed to sharpen preparations for the 2026/2027 season and give coaching staff an opportunity to assess their squads ahead of the official campaign.
Organised by Oman Club, supported by Wings Sports Company and supervised by the Oman Handball Association, the tournament runs from October 26 to 31 and features Oman Club, Khabourah, Nizwa and Muscat.
The opening day features two matches, with Oman Club facing Nizwa at 6.15 pm before Khabourah take on Muscat at 8.15 pm.
The competition will follow a single round-robin format, with the top two teams advancing to the final on October 31 to compete for the title. The format is expected to provide each side with valuable match practice while allowing coaches to assess tactical approaches, player combinations and overall readiness.
The tournament carries particular importance for Oman Club, who face a demanding schedule in November. Their upcoming commitments include the Super Cup, which begins on November 8, and the 42nd Gulf Clubs Handball Championship in Bahrain from November 21 to 30.
Oman Club have been drawn in Group B of the Gulf competition alongside Bahrain’s Al Ahli, Qatar’s Al Rayyan and Kuwait’s Kuwait Club. Group A comprises Qatar’s Al Arabi, Bahrain’s Al Shabab, Saudi Arabia’s Al Mohit and the UAE’s Sharjah.
The domestic tournament therefore provides Oman Club with an important opportunity to fine-tune their preparations before facing regional opposition, while the other participating teams can use the matches to build fitness and improve their competitive rhythm ahead of the new season.
Samir bin Issa al Salimi, executive director of Wings Sports Company, said the championship represents an initiative to support the development of handball in Oman by combining competitive standards with effective organisation and sustainable partnerships.
He said the tournament would help teams improve their technical and physical readiness, while enabling coaching staff to evaluate players and explore different options before the season begins. It also offers an opportunity to increase the sport’s visibility among spectators and the media.

Al Salimi stressed that the continued development of handball requires a coordinated approach involving high-quality competitions, professional event management and effective media coverage. He added that the company aims to support clubs and sports federations through services in management, development, marketing and sponsorship.
He also revealed the company’s ambition to establish the championship as an annual event, with the possibility of inviting clubs from outside Oman in future editions. Such expansion, he said, could broaden competition and increase the tournament’s sporting and commercial value.
Achieving that goal will require a balanced organisational and financial framework, as well as attracting sponsors and ensuring effective cooperation among the parties involved.
The organisers hope the championship will develop beyond its immediate role as a pre-season competition and become a regular fixture on Oman’s handball calendar, offering clubs a platform to compete, exchange experience and strengthen their preparations for the season ahead.
