The changing role of Omani women

Oman has made significant progress in creating opportunities for women, particularly in education and employment. Today, Omani women are becoming entrepreneurs and are professionals across different sectors.
These achievements deserve recognition. At the same time, celebrating progress also means looking ahead and considering how these opportunities can lead to greater professional growth, leadership, and influence.
Education has played an important role in this journey.
Across Oman, young women are working hard to gain qualifications and build meaningful careers. Their ambitions extend beyond finding employment. Many want to contribute new ideas, take on responsibilities, and make a difference in their workplaces and communities.
Young graduates need opportunities to gain experience, develop confidence, and learn from professionals who can guide them.
Stronger connections between universities and industry, along with internships and mentoring programmes, can make this transition easier and more rewarding.
Another important area is women’s participation in leadership. More women in the workforce is encouraging, but their contributions shouldn't end with employment. Women bring valuable knowledge, experiences, and perspectives that can help organisations grow.
Giving them opportunities to lead projects, shape important decisions, and advance into senior roles allows institutions to benefit more fully from their abilities.
The growing interest in entrepreneurship among Omani women is equally encouraging. Women are turning their skills and interests into businesses, from tourism and hospitality to retail, education, food, and creative industries.
In Dhofar, local tourism, traditional products, and small enterprises give women opportunities to build businesses rooted in the region's identity and resources. Starting a business takes courage, but sustaining its success requires ongoing support.
Access to finance, practical business guidance, digital marketing skills, and opportunities to reach wider markets can help women grow small initiatives into sustainable businesses.
While discussing women's achievements, it is equally important to recognise the responsibilities many carry beyond their professional lives.
Women's progress should never be measured through professional success alone. Every woman has her own aspirations and understanding of a fulfilling life.
Families and workplaces both have an important role in supporting these different aspirations. Encouragement at home, understanding employers, and opportunities for professional development can make a real difference. Supporting women does not mean expecting them to manage everything perfectly. It means creating conditions in which they can make choices and develop their abilities without unnecessary barriers.
The changing world of work will bring new opportunities and challenges. Artificial intelligence, digital technologies, and new business models are transforming how people learn, work, and run businesses. Omani women should have every opportunity to benefit from these changes. Training in digital skills, entrepreneurship, and emerging technologies can help explore new careers and strengthen existing businesses.
What makes Oman's journey meaningful is that women's progress is taking place within a society that values its traditions and cultural identity. Modern ambitions and cultural values do not have to compete. Women can pursue education, careers, and leadership while staying connected to the traditions and communities that matter to them. The goal should be to provide opportunities and respect individual choices rather than define one path to success.
Omani Women's Day reminds us of the potential that remains to be developed. The next stage of progress lies in helping young women turn their education into meaningful careers.
As Oman moves toward 2040, continuing to recognise their contributions and support their aspirations will benefit not only women, but also families, communities, and the nation as a whole.
