For Maitha al Busaidi, falling from a horse was not the end of her equestrian journey. It was a moment that tested her determination and strengthened her resolve to continue pursuing a passion that has brought her confidence, happiness and achievement.
An Omani equestrian, television presenter and poet living with Down Syndrome, Maitha has embraced different creative and sporting pursuits, demonstrating how encouragement and perseverance can help people discover their abilities.
Her love for horses began long before she became a competitor. After experiencing horse riding for the first time, she found herself drawn to the sport, looking forward to every opportunity to ride and train. Gradually, equestrianism became an important part of her life.
The journey was not without challenges. Initially, she experienced some fear, while training required patience and time. The encouragement of her family and coaches helped her overcome her hesitation and develop greater confidence.
“They always encouraged me and told me, ‘You can do it’. This gave me great motivation”, she said.
Beyond the sport itself, horse riding has taught Maitha to be braver and believe in herself. Her determination was particularly evident after a fall that could have discouraged her from returning to the saddle.
Following medical examinations, she decided she wanted to continue riding. Her perseverance eventually led her to compete in the Middle East and North Africa Championship, where she won gold, silver and bronze medals.
“I was very happy and proud of myself”, she said, recalling the achievement.
For Maitha, these victories represent more than medals. They reflect the value of persistence and the importance of continuing despite setbacks. Her experience has also shaped her belief that people with Down Syndrome should be encouraged to explore their interests and discover their potential through sport.
“Anyone who has a talent should try and not be afraid”, she said, emphasising the importance of support and encouragement in helping people achieve their goals.
Her ambitions extend beyond equestrianism. As a television presenter, Maitha enjoys speaking with people, discovering new stories and introducing audiences to different experiences. Through her work, she hopes to highlight the talents of people with disabilities and encourage others to pursue their aspirations.
Poetry provides another outlet, allowing her to express her thoughts and emotions. Each pursuit offers something different, whether the excitement of competition, the opportunity to connect with others or the freedom of creative expression.
As Oman celebrates Omani Women’s Day, Maitha’s story highlights the diverse talents and achievements of Omani women. Her journey challenges assumptions about disability, showing that opportunities to participate, develop skills and succeed should be accessible to everyone.
Her message to anyone hesitant to follow a dream is straightforward: try, and if you fail, try again.
“Do not say, ‘I cannot’. Say, ‘I can’ and keep trying”, she said.
For Maitha, every fall is an opportunity to rise again, and every achievement is a reminder of what determination can make possible.
