MUSCAT, OCT 20
Spanish engineering consultancy IDOM has been selected by China’s Shanxi Installation Group to undertake detailed engineering design for the 500 MW Al Kamil Solar I Independent Power Project (IPP), a major renewable energy development planned in South Al Sharqiyah Governorate, Oman.
Announcing the award on October 19, IDOM said its scope encompasses detailed engineering services for the utility-scale photovoltaic facility, alongside the definition of initial site studies essential to the project’s successful implementation.
The contract represents a further expansion of IDOM’s renewable energy portfolio in the Middle East and strengthens its involvement in Oman’s accelerating transition towards cleaner electricity generation.
IDOM’s multidisciplinary engineering team will work closely with Shanxi Installation Group, which secured the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the project in July 2026, to support the development of an efficient, reliable and high-performance solar power facility.
The Al Kamil Solar I project is being developed by a consortium comprising France-based EDF Power Solutions, Oman National Engineering & Investment Company (ONEIC) and OQ Alternative Energy (OQAE), the renewable energy arm of OQ Group.
Located in the Al Kamil Wal Wafi area of South Al Sharqiyah Governorate, the project will supply electricity to Nama Power and Water Procurement Company (Nama PWP) under a long-term power purchase agreement.
Agreements underpinning the development were signed in June 2026 during His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik’s state visit to France, underscoring the growing importance of international partnerships in Oman’s clean energy ambitions.
Estimated to cost approximately RO 100 million ($260 million), the solar facility will occupy around 4.7 million square metres. The EDF-led consortium will finance, build, own, operate and maintain the project.
Under its EPC contract, Shanxi Installation Group is responsible for engineering, procurement, equipment supply, construction, installation, grid connection, testing and commissioning, together with two-and-a-half years of operation and maintenance following completion.
Headquartered in Spain, IDOM is an international engineering, architecture and consulting group with extensive experience across renewable energy, infrastructure and industrial development.
Its clean energy capabilities span utility-scale solar and wind projects, green hydrogen, energy storage, hydropower, electricity transmission and industrial decarbonisation. The consultancy also provides feasibility assessments, technical advisory and owner's engineering services for complex energy developments worldwide.
