ABBA’s timeless hits bring generations together in Muscat

From the glittering disco anthems of the 1970s to the enduring pop melodies that continue to resonate with younger audiences, ABBA’s music brought generations together in Muscat as fans gathered for an evening of nostalgia, dancing and celebration.
Held on Thursday, October 8, at the Oman Ballroom of Sheraton Oman Hotel, the ABBA tribute concert by RËVIVÅL transformed the venue into a celebration of one of pop music’s most enduring groups, drawing audiences of different ages united by their appreciation for the Swedish band’s timeless catalogue.

As the music filled the ballroom, familiar melodies prompted enthusiastic reactions from the crowd, with longtime admirers revisiting songs that had accompanied different stages of their lives, while younger concertgoers experienced the excitement of hearing the classics performed live.
The setlist offered a journey through ABBA’s celebrated repertoire, moving between dancefloor favourites such as ‘Voulez-Vous’, ‘Dancing Queen’ and ‘Waterloo’, and more emotional numbers, including ‘Chiquitita’. Other recognisable hits, such as ‘Mamma Mia’ and ‘Super Trouper’, added to an evening built around the melodies, harmonies and theatrical showmanship that have defined the group’s appeal for decades.

For many in attendance, the experience went beyond listening to familiar songs. It was an opportunity to share a musical legacy across generations, demonstrating how music recorded decades ago can continue to create new memories.
Jihad al Shaihani, an Omani visitor to the concert, said one of the most striking aspects of the evening was seeing so many young people, including Omanis, embrace a band whose origins stretch back more than half a century.
He appreciated how the audience came together to celebrate ABBA’s music, with younger fans showing an enthusiasm comparable to that of those who had grown up with the group’s hits.
For Al Shaihani, the turnout reflected the timeless nature of ABBA’s songs and performances. Although the band emerged in a different musical era, its melodies and distinctive style have continued to find audiences far removed from the period in which they first became popular.
The concert also highlighted the role of contemporary entertainment in introducing older music to new listeners. For some younger fans, ABBA’s catalogue was not a childhood soundtrack but a discovery made through films, theatre and popular culture.

Sam Nabil, an Omani college undergraduate who attended the show, described the concert as an incredible experience, particularly because it gave him the opportunity to hear live songs he had long wanted to experience beyond a screen or recording.
His enthusiasm for ABBA developed largely through the stage musical ‘Mamma Mia!’ and its film adaptations starring Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried. The productions introduced him to the group’s music and helped turn songs written decades earlier into part of his own musical interests.
Nabil said conversations with fellow attendees revealed a similar pattern among many of his peers, who had also discovered ABBA through the films.
The experience illustrated how the group’s music continues to cross cultural and generational boundaries, finding new life through reinterpretation while retaining the qualities that made it popular in the first place.
Suroor Sidhique, founder of Droom Boom Events and organiser of the concert, described the show’s success as a proud and memorable moment for the team.

He thanked the people of Muscat for their response and praised the audience’s energy and enthusiasm throughout the evening, as well as the behind-the-scenes team whose efforts helped bring the event to life.
“Music has the power to bring people together and create unforgettable memories,” Sidhique said, expressing hope that more experiences would be brought to Oman.
As the evening drew to a close, the concert served as a reminder that the life of a song does not end with the era in which it was released. Through live performances, films and shared experiences, ABBA’s music continues to connect listeners across generations, giving familiar melodies new meaning with every audience that discovers them.
