Lena Dunham’s award-winning television show “Girls” will return to screens for a limited run, HBO said on Tuesday.
The five-episode revival is set to begin production next year, a decade after the original series finale aired.
Dunham, who created, wrote and starred in the show, will reprise her role as Hannah alongside Allison Williams as Marnie, Jemima Kirke as Jessa, Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna and Andrew Rannells as Elijah.
“I’ve missed these characters, but for a long time I couldn’t quite picture them in the present day,” Dunham said in a statement.
“Then, right around my fortieth birthday, they started talking to me in the shower,” she said. “And, as you may remember, once this fivesome starts talking it’s pretty hard to get them to stop.”
HBO announced the show’s return in a social media post featuring Dunham on a mock video call with members of the original cast.
In the video, Dunham asks whether the cast members are in before raising another question: “Can we still call it ‘Girls’?”
Adam Driver, who played Hannah’s on-off love interest, was not mentioned in the announcement.
In her memoir “Famesick”, Dunham accused Driver of aggressive behaviour on the set of “Girls”. Driver has not commented publicly on the allegations.
The original series followed the lives of women in their twenties in New York, with critics describing it as a defining portrayal of the social mores of that generation.
The show received 19 Emmy nominations and won two awards during its six seasons. — AFP
