Contract awarded for 8.7km road network in Duqm fisheries zone

The Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (OPAZ) has awarded a contract for the first phase of roads and infrastructure development in Duqm’s fisheries industries zone.

The project aims to strengthen the zone’s capacity to attract industrial investment and provide the roads and utilities needed to support existing facilities and future expansion. It will also support the development of food and fisheries industries and increase the value derived from fisheries resources.

The project includes approximately 8.7 kilometres of internal roads, alongside integrated utility networks, and is scheduled for completion within 12 months.

Road works comprise approximately 7.3 kilometres of single-lane roads and 1.4 kilometres of two-lane roads, two roundabouts, traffic signs and road markings. These improvements will help regulate vehicle and truck movements and improve access to industrial facilities and service areas.

The scope also covers drainage networks, drinking water and irrigation networks, high- and low-voltage electricity networks, street lighting and telecommunications ducts, providing infrastructure to meet the needs of investment projects and operations within the zone.

Abdullah bin Salem Al-Hakamani, Director of the Technical Affairs Department at the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD), said: “The project will deliver an interconnected network of roads and essential utilities to meet the needs of industrial sites and improve traffic flow within the zone. Water, electricity, telecommunications and drainage infrastructure will provide suitable operating conditions for facilities and support handling, transport and related services.”

The Fisheries and Food Industries Complex at SEZAD covers approximately 7.5 square kilometres. Its proximity to the multipurpose fishing port supports the integration of fish landing, processing and related logistics operations.

Total investment in the fisheries and food industries zone exceeds OMR 123 million. Activities include seafood processing and canning, fish oil production and other related industries.

Ibrahim bin Zaher al Rawahi, Acting Director of the Industrial Clusters Department at SEZAD, said: “The project represents an important step in improving the investment environment for Duqm’s food and fisheries industries by providing the roads and utilities that industrial facilities need and strengthening links between production, processing, storage and transport. These improvements will support the expansion of existing projects and attract new investment, helping to increase the economic value of fisheries resources and strengthen food security.”

He added that infrastructure development would create further investment opportunities in food and fisheries industries and associated services, while supporting small and medium-sized enterprises operating in transport, services and maintenance. This would enhance local value creation and contribute to greater economic diversification within the zone.
